Buying clothing for yourself is hard enough but buying it for others is twice as hard because they aren’t present to try on items or express their opinions about a particular piece. Some people say you should avoid buying clothes for other people altogether (excluding your young kids), but it’s possible to shop for others successfully if you keep a few things in mind:
- Learn Their Style- Don’t shop for other people blindly. Pay attention to the style and fit of the clothing they usually wear and use that to inform your purchase. For example, if they usually wear very minimal, neutral outfits, don’t assume that they want to go out of their comfort zone with something that’s bright and bold.
- Consider Their Current Wardrobe- If you’re shopping for a significant other or close friend, try to remember some of the items in their current wardrobe. This will prevent you from duplicating clothing pieces they already own. In addition, it will prevent them from having to buy new shoes or other items to match the clothing you just bought them.
- Find Out Their Measurements- Choosing the right size can often be a nightmare because sizes vary across brands, especially for women’s clothing. If you can, find out the person’s actual measurements in inches or centimeters. Always keep the receipt, too. This way, they will be able to exchange or return the clothes if they don’t fit.
